Engaged Buddhism

In fact, engaged Buddihsm is just Buddhism.
The word 'engaged' is to draw people's attention to the fact that Buddihsm should be practised not only in the monasteries but also in the world.

In Vietnam we use that word a lot, because we live in a situation of war where people suffer.
If you meditate in a temple and you hear bombs falling and know that innocent people are being killed, you cannot just stay within the compound of the temple because to meditate is to be aware of what is going on.

So your meditation takes on a broader meaning in the context of society.
You can bring relief to the wounded and the refugees while you continue the meditation that you started in the meditation hall.

You can practise mindful breathing, mindful walking, mindful helping, and still remain yourself while doing the job that compasion needs you to do and that is how and why engaged Buddhism was born.
